Holiday Job Search Tips From Top Recruiters

12/14/2015

Many people perceive the holidays as a bad time to look for a new job. Traditionally,  managers are intermittently out of the office and most people are simply focused on the holidays, rather than on their job search. While hiring in many industries often tends to slow down this time of year, we’re experiencing a very busy 4th quarter at Brightwing (view all of our open jobs). Competition for talent is high and many hiring managers are motivated to fill positions before the new year or want someone to start soon after the first of January. We also see a number of hiring managers anxious to fill positions before the end of the year for budgetary reasons. With that in mind, Brightwing recruiters offered their best holiday job search tips to those who are looking to start the new year off on the right foot.

"Use the holidays as a time to reconnect with people you haven't reached out to in a while. Casually put it out there that you're looking to make some changes in the New Year - If they hear of anything, they'll likely recommend to you."

"You should really think about timing before getting too involved in a job search. So many people rush into new jobs, but fail to consider the ramifications of making a job change at this time of the year. Do your kids need to be watched while you're on holiday vacation? When are year-end bonuses handed out - and is it wise to wait for those before making a move?

On the flipside, it’s wise to consider many companies have Jan 2nd (or 4th this year) as a projected start date. So don’t turn your search off if you’re ready to make a change and start the new year off right!"

"Network at holiday festivities. It’s a small world, and you never know who your brother, cousin or mother knows in your industry. A personal connection to a possible job opportunity, recruiter or hiring manager is a great way to get your foot in the door."

"Less is more! Keep your resume simple and to the point. Use a format that has little to no decoration and really highlights your skills and experience. Unless you are a designer, more decorative resumes are generally distracting and unnecessary."

"Don’t forget to keep your eyes and ears open during your work and personal holiday parties. Building relationships and networking is important on all levels and this can’t be forgotten during the holidays. I recommend getting out of your comfort zone while attending gatherings by speaking to different acquaintances, family members, and friends. You never know what opportunities and directions that it can lead you in."
